Projection mapping and its respective software can be intimidating, excluding everyday users from creating their own projection art and AR experiences due to the advanced technical skills required. Projection mapping tutorials are often geared toward 3D art enthusiasts and tech junkies. But for those who aren’t as experienced, you may find yourself googling unfamiliar lingo, or watching how-to-videos to help you better understand how to successfully map a creation. We get it, projection mapping can be frustrating.

So for those of you who consider yourselves an enthusiastic hobbyist rather than an audio visual expert, we’ve put together an easy-to-digest guide. Welcome to Projection Mapping 101.

Let’s jump in:

  1. Choose Your Background: What’s great about 3D projection mapping is that you now have the ability to project images, video and art wherever you please. So pick out a good background canvas: the side of your house, your office space or backyard landscape. We recommend a flat-surfaced, light-colored area.
  2. Map Your Canvas: Once you have your canvas set, you’ll calibrate the scene to begin creating your projection mapping experience. In this step, your projector will take a snapshot of your canvassed area and allow you to scale and set the perimeter of your project. Are there areas you don’t want to project on? Do you need to move your projector back to include a certain area? This step allows you to narrow and fine-tune the scope of your project.
  3. Start Creating: Now that you have your background scaled and calibrated, it’s time to create your 3D projection. Using your design software, create your projection experience by adding content such as text, images or videos. With an integrated design software, you have the ability to customize your scene to include loops and layers for added augmented reality (AR) effects.
  4. Ready to Render: When you’ve finished adding all your content and your 3D art is created, you’re ready to project! Once you’re ready to bring your creation to life, simply select ‘Render’ on your projection mapping software. Yep, it’s that easy.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully created a projected AR experience! Now that you’ve gotten started, check out our collection of resources. Want to learn more about what Luxedo has to offer? We’d love to hear from you!
